[This is an answer to a question asked by an attendee at a information architecture webinar I presented for ASIS&T in January 2011 (slides: Information architecture intro). ]
Have your questions answered in person at my IA workshop, London 27 Jan 2011
Question: What kind of education did you have? Did you take classes for IA?
This is a very easy question for me. I've been doing IA work for so long that there were no classes to take (though I think I did one with Lou Rosenfeld & Mags Hanley in 2001 or so).
When a lot of us started in IA in the late 90s or early 2000s there weren't classes, books or best practices. But we had each other via mailing lists, and we had a brand new field all ready for exploration. So we figured out things as we went along and shared them with each other online and at conferences.
Now there are a lot more resources. There are conferences and workshops and books and university courses. But none of those beat the experience you get from giving something a go and seeing what happens. I still recommend you do this - but with one caveat. You must do the step of seeing what happens, and learning from that.
